Organic Apples/Apple Cider Vinegar

There are over 7500 cultivated varieties of apples.  Along with roses, apples belong to the Rosaceae family.  They grow on a deciduous tree that blossoms in the spring and yield its fruit in late summer/early autumn.

The saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” originated in 19th century Wales.  The reasons why are as follow.

  • Apples are a source of both soluble and insoluble fiber………  Soluble fiber helps to prevent cholesterol buildup in the lining of the blood vessel walls, thus helping reduce the incident of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
  •   The insoluble fiber in apples provides bulk in the intestinal tract, holding water to cleanse and move food quickly through the digestive system.  Apples are often referred to as “nature’s broom”.
  • They also contain calcium, phosphorous, potassium and Vitamin C.  However the majority of the fiber and nutrients are actually in the peel itself.  So it is imperative to eat the peel!
  • Non-organic apples known as conventional apples currently rank higher than any other fruit or vegetable in terms of pesticide residue–approximately 56 chemical residues per apple!
  • Since it is imperative to eat the peel, when picking apples, always choose ORGANIC.

Apples can be eaten in a variety of ways.  Apple slices with a sprinkle of Celtic Sea Salt brings out the delicious sweetness of the fruit itself. Organic nut butter with apple also a tasty healthy treat–especially for the young’uns. And let’s not forget good ol apple sauce.

Dosing:  The Braggs in their book have a ton of dosing recommendations. t is said a tablespoon a day keeps the doctor away. Depending on the situation, a good rule of thumb is 2 ounces of ACV in 4-6 ounces water before meals; then the Hippocratic ACV with honey warm water drink; then there is salad dressings galore.

NOTE: To aid in digestion, I am always recommending Hydrochloric Acid such as HCL Pro-Zyme or Betaine HCL w Pepsin. HOWEVER, I would much prefer the food source of Apple Cider Vinegar over the pills and NEVER Apple Cider Vinegar pills.. Spiritual Aspects of Autumn

 The Work of Autumn: Cleaning Out Old Negativity

In autumn we learn more about ourselves, perhaps, than in any other season. Having provided the harvest, Nature now makes everything bare. In this season Nature lets go of its abundant creation of the past year in a grand final display. Autumn marks the end of the growing season – a turning inward, a falling away of outer-directed energy. Leaves turn color and drop. The old leaves go back to the earth, enriching it to promote the coming of new leaves, a new harvest.

Nature instructs us about our own cycles of creating and letting go: Trees in autumn don’t stubbornly hold onto their leaves because they might need them next year. Yet how many of us defy the cycle and hold onto what we’ve produced or collected – those decayed leaves, that old negativity? How can we hope for a harvest next year unless we let go of the old and start afresh?

The energy of this season, more than any other, supports our letting go of the waste, the old and stale in our lives, leaving us receptive to the pure and new, granting us a vision of who we are in our essence. Autumn returns us to our essence, moves us to eliminate what we no longer need, reveals again what is most precious in our lives.

In Chinese medicine, autumn is the season of the element Metal (or air). Grief is the emotion of the Metal element. We all experience loss, separation, and “letting go,” and we appropriately feel grief at those times. Grief cleanses us of what is no longer needed in our lives. When the energy of Metal is blocked or imbalanced within us, our expression of grief likewise becomes imbalanced and inappropriate. It may be excessive and ongoing. Or, in the other extreme, it may be absent, as in those who cannot express their grief.

The Colon and Letting Go
The Colon, one of the two organs in the Metal element, has the function of eliminating what is unnecessary or toxic from our bodies. But we are more than just physical bodies. Think of the daily onslaught of “garbage” directed at our minds and our spirit. We need to eliminate mental and spiritual rubbish, lest our minds become toxic and constipated, unable to experience the pure and the beautiful that also surround us. The Colon function on the mental and spirit level enables us to let go of all this waste.

The Lungs and Inspiration
There is more to this season than “letting go” – it is also a time to take in the pure. The air in autumn takes on a new crispness. Think of waking up on a brisk fall day and filling your lungs with that clean, cool autumn air. The Lung, the other organ contained within the Metal element, enables us to take in the pure, the new. It grants us the inspiration of a breath of fresh air. In classical Chinese medicine, the Lung is described as “the receiver of the pure Chi from the Heavens.”

The Lung and Colon work together as a team, one taking in the pure, the other eliminating waste. If these organs failed to do their jobs, imagine what might result – certainly we might experience physical ailments of the Lung and Colon such as bronchitis, shortness of breath, cough, allergies, nasal congestion, emphysema, colds, sore throat, constipation, diarrhea, spastic colon, and abdominal pain.But what happens to our mind and spirit if waste keeps building up and we are unable to take in purity? How are we apt to feel? Instead of tranquillity and inspiration, spontaneity and freshness, we feel depression, stubbornness (inability to “let go”), isolation, negativity. We see the dark side in everything, all the things that could go wrong. Of course, we would not choose to act and feel that way any more than we would choose to have constipation – but in this condition of imbalance, that is how we must be.

Further, if we view our body as a community of different organs and functions, how well will those symptoms arise anywhere. In this view, we can see how foolish it is to simply treat a symptom. We must find the cause. If the cause is an imbalance in Metal – if the Lung is unable to take in the pure, or the Colon unable to eliminate waste – we must first restore that function. Then the resulting symptoms will improve, regardless of how they manifest.

***Just as metals give value to the earth (gold and silver, minerals and trace elements), the Metal element within us gives our sense of self-worth. Each of us is a miracle of creation, more valuable and special than anything we could ever pursue; each of us has a unique and priceless contribution to make. Yet when our Metal energy is imbalanced, we cannot sense our value; so we compensate by seeking what we think will add to our worth: status, money, power, conquest – none of them bad or wrong of themselves, although our pursuit of them can be a symptom. Once we have acquired these things, however, we remain strangely unfulfilled. Persons with a Metal imbalance seek respect, quality, and recognition from the outside because they feel the lack of worth within. These are people who have difficulty “letting go” because they identify their own worth with “things” – achievements, attachments, collections, possessions, attitudes stored in the cluttered attic of the mind.

Restoring our Metal
In the season of autumn, the Metal element is at its peak and particularly amenable to treatment. Fortunately, using the system of Chinese medicine, we can resurrect and rebuild the Metal within us – in its physical expression as well as in mind and spirit. We also can help ourselves by learning about the nature of the season and then acting in harmony with its spirit.

As Nature moves into a period of rest, we too must be cautious not to overexert. The time for “putting it all out there” – the summer – has passed. Now is the time to contain ourselves, acting and speaking only when necessary, behaving with economy, exerting our will quietly and calmly. Those of us in the “autumn of our lives” must protect ourselves from the extremes of hot and cold within this season.

  • Go through your closet, desk, garage, medicine cabinet – any cluttered storage area-and discard what you no longer need. Then donate, sell, or otherwise circulate what might be of value to others.
  • Do a mental inventory: Examine attitudes (prejudices, envies, hatreds, jealousies, resentments) stored within your psyche. When possible, contact those with whom you harbor old “stuff.” Attempt to resolve the hurtful old issues, and then let them go.
  • For issues you cannot resolve directly with others, or for old issues with yourself, write them on paper, being as specific as possible. Then burn the paper, symbolically releasing the content.
  • Take time each day to breathe slowly and deeply. As you inhale the clean autumn air, feel yourself energized and purified. Feel the old negativity, impurity, and pain leave your body and psyche. Then contemplate briefly who you are without these identifications.

Adrenal Gland Function/Anatomy

Adrenal Gland Function/Anatomy

The adrenal glands also known as the suprarenal glands, are endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys.  They are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in conjunction with stress, mainly cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine.  The latter two are known as catecholamines.  The adrenal glands effect kidney function by secreting a hormone known as Angiotensin II which is involved in regulating plasma osmosis.  There is a 50 fold increase in kidney failure and this increase may be due to the impact of stress on the adrenal glands and its subsequent effect on kidney function.

The adrenal glands are divided by two distinct anatomies.  The first being the outside core known as the cortex which is responsible for producing cortisol, aldosterone and androgens.  The inner center known as the medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Corticosteroid hormones are synthesized from cholesterol and include cortisol, corticosterone and androgens such as testosterone and aldosterone.  Unlike the medulla which has direct nerve innervation, the cortex is regulated by neuroendocrine hormones secreted by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus.

The medulla or inner core of the adrenal gland is under direct supervision of the Sympathetic Nervous System through “circuitry” extending from Thoracic 5 through Thoracic 11. As mentioned above, the medulla produces both epinephrine and norepinephrine commonly known as noradrenaline. These are water soluble hormones derived from the amino acid tyrosine and are the major contributor to what is known as the fight-or-flight response.

The adrenal glands and the thyroid gland are the organs that have the greatest blood supply per gram of tissue. Up to 60 arterioles may enter each adrenal gland. This may be one of the reasons lung cancer commonly metastasizes to the adrenals.

Although all of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands are vital for our existence, in this piece, I will focus on Cortisol known in medical circles as “the death hormone”

Cortisol levels are most accurately measured using a saliva test requiring an early morning reading, a mid morning reading, and early afternoon reading and a mid-afternoon reading.  The measurements should be highest in the morning and gradually decrease throughout the day.

Cortisol can also be measured by blood tests but the results do not seem to be as accurate as saliva testing.

The Cortisol Melatonin Circadian Coordination Rhythm is a phenomenon where the cortisol levels drop as the day progresses and the melatonin levels increase.  Melatonin is responsible for naturally lowering cortisol levels.

Problems with the above cycle create problems within the Hippocampus portion of the brain and it is in the Hippocampus where Alzheimer’s and Dementia first appear.

Cortisol also plays a role in heart disease and blood sugar regulation.

Normal Cortisol levels are necessary to regulate the immune system, glucose and lipid (fat) metabolism and maintain cardiac output by increasing vascular tone and decreasing vascular permeability.

Abnormal cortisol levels are associated with hypertension, increased heart rate and increased levels of total and low density lipoproteins, cholesterol and fasting insulin and glucose levels.

Cortisol increases glucose levels and as such is an important factor in the development of Type II diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus).  A study done in New York showed 1 in 7 New Yorkers will develop Type II diabetes.  This condition which was once a minor population issue has now gone pandemic.

Through saliva testing, what is seen more often than not is low cortisol as opposed to high. This is known as “flat-lining” and it is directly associated with “burn out” caused by years of unyielding stress.

Since cortisol is produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands and since the cortex of the adrenal gland operates from transmitter signals originating in the Pituitary-Hypothalamus Axis.  This axis also produces thyroid stimulating hormone known as TSH and this is why many believe the adrenal glands and the thyroid somehow work hand in hand.  Cortisol is known to inhibit T4 hormone to T3 and these two hormones along with TSH are major factors in thyroid health and function.

“The Pregnenolone Steal”

This is the phenomena where the super hormone Pregnenolone which is manufactured from cholesterolis used as the raw material to make the stress hormone cortisol instead of YOUR other hormones- such as thyroid hormones and sex hormones. according to the chart below, high stress causes Pregnenolone to go entirely to the left side at the expense of the right side.

Adrenal Failure is measured in Stages I, II and III with three being the worst and most common.

There are numerous products on the market to support adrenal health.  Standard Process Food Supplements first introduced their product “Drenamin” back in 1935.

In my practice and because no two people are alike, I use a variety of products all  of which tend tosupport the adrenal glands as opposed to stimulating them. One of the is Support Adrenal pictured at the top of this article.

There are also a number of adatopgenic herbs such as ginseng and licorice which have been made into tinctures since “the beginning of time” so to speak.

But one should use supplementation for a limited time only to allow themselves to get from point A to point B.  The real key to healing the adrenal glands takes much more than “popping a pill”.  What follows are some way to manage stress.

1.      Meditation, Meditation, Meditation—20 minutes twice daily would be perfect

2.      Exercise – make it a daily habit & something you enjoy. Cardiovascular health at least 30 minutes per day, resistance training. Just do it!

3.      Calming Exercise – yoga, tai chi, meditation – they will extend your life

4.      Nutrition: Anti-inflammatory diet. Better eating habits. No coffee, sugar, soda, or junk. Don’t eat out of a bag, box, can, & THE SAME GOES FOR YOUR KIDS!

5.      Balance perceived stress – change your response to stress…your reaction is your choice.  Change habitual reactions, especially with family.

6.      Journaling 20 minutes a day decreases stress & inflammation.

7.      Sleep at least 7 hours per day & be in bed by 10 p.m.

15 Reasons to Breastfeed Your Baby (Including Two Newly Discovered, and MAJOR, Benefits You Likely Haven’t Heard Before)

Increasing breastfeeding rates in the United States is a national health goal that’s part of the Healthy People 2010 initiative. The goal is to have 75 percent of mothers breastfeed their babies initially, 50 percent after six months and 25 percent after one year.

The American Academy of PediatricsFor comparison’s sake, not even a decade ago in 2005 while over 74 percent of infants born were breastfed initially, just 43 percent were still breastfeeding at 6 months and 21 percent at 1 year. Further, only 32 percent were breastfed exclusively through three months of age and 12 percent through 6 months — despite the fact that many health organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, including:

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
  • The American Academy of Family Physicians
  • The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine
  • The World Health Organization
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund

In fact, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, continuing as long as mother and baby wish, while the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or longer.

The reason breastfeeding has become a national health goal is because research has shown breast milk is the superior choice for infant nutrition. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

“Both babies and mothers gain many benefits from breastfeeding. Breast milk is easy to digest and contains antibodies that can protect infants from bacterial and viral infections. Research indicates that women who breastfeed may have lower rates of certain breast and ovarian cancers.”

Studies have found the following benefits to breastfed infants:

  1. Breastfeeding is associated with a higher high school grade point average and an increase in the odds of attending college, according to a new study published in the Journal of Human Capital. In fact, for each additional month of breastfeeding, there was an increase in high school GPA of 0.019 points, and an increase in the probability of college attendance of 0.014.
  1. A decreased risk of infectious diseases including bacterial meningitis, bacteremia, diarrhea, respiratory tract infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, otitis media, urinary tract infection and late-onset sepsis in preterm infants.
  1. A 21 percent lower risk of dying after the first month of birth.
  1. A lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome in the first year of life.
  1. Lower rates of type 1 and 2 diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin disease, overweight and obesity, high cholesterol and asthma in adulthood.
  1. Enhanced cognitive development (the reason for the findings in benefit #1).
  1. Breastfeeding provides analgesia to infants during painful procedures like a heel-stick for newborn screenings.

And, according to AAP, moms also experience benefits from breastfeeding, including:

  1. A new study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology found that women in their 60s who had breastfed for a year or more during their lifetime were 10 percent less likely to develop heart disease and significantly less likely to develop risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Further, the longer a woman had breastfed, the lower their risk of heart attacks, strokes or heart disease became.
  1. Decreased postpartum bleeding.
  1. Helps the uterus get back in shape faster after childbirth.
